Dr. Barnett currently serves as a Distinguished Strategist at the Oak Ridge Center for Advanced Studies at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory and as a Visiting Scholar at the Howard W. Baker Center at the University of Tennessee. He has also written for Esquire magazine (where he was named "the strategist" in their first-ever "Best & Brightest" issue in December 2002), Wired and the Washington Post. He has been a Contributing Editor for Esquire magazine since the beginning of 2005. Dr. Barnett writes a weekly column for the Knoxville News Sentinel, and these commentaries are distributed nationally through the Howard Scripps News Service.

Dr. Barnett is best known as the author of The Pentagon's New Map: War and Peace in the Twenty-First Century (New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons, 2004). Described by Washington Post columnist David Ignatius as "a combination of Tom Friedman on globalization and Karl von Clausewitz on war," the wide-ranging volume has generated an enormous amount of reaction from around the world. His latest book is Blueprint for Action: A Future Worth Creating, also published by G.P. Putnam's Sons.
